BEAR ISLAND LIGHT - Maine

Year Established: 1839

 

Bear Island Lighthouse was constructed in 1839 on the southeast point of the island. The original lighthouse burned down in 1852, and the following year a new brick tower was built to replace it. The lighthouse was completely rebuilt again in 1889.

Bear Island Lighthouse was deactivated in 1981. The property became part of Arcadia National Park in 1987. The lighthouse keeper’s house was then refurbished, and the tower was reactivated in 1989 as a private aid to navigation.
